África do Sul. Segundo seu website, ela é pintora, ilustradora, artista gráfica
e designer.
Eu
HARI: Eu
amo criar obras figurativas. A forma do corpo humano, especificamente o corpo
nu, sempre me fascinou.
No entanto, Deus me
DOUGLAS:
Seus quadros carregam uma poesia poderosa. A
público antes do fim do ano.
São eles: A.I.
emocionar.

INTERVIEW WITH HARI
LUALHATI:
Hari Lualhati is a 34 years old
Philippine born artist currently living in Cape Town, South Africa. According
to her website, she is a painter, illustrator, graphic artist and designer.
Graduated in Fine Arts from the University of Philippines Diliman in 2006, Hari
has been amassing major international awards throughout her career, exhibiting
her works in the following places: Philippines, South Africa, Hong Kong, Italy,
Germany, Armenia, Ukraine, Prague (Czech Republic), Zaragoza and Barcelona
(Spain).
According
to the artist, her style is based on the triad realism-symbolism-expressionism.
Her paintings are rich in detail, guided by love and the value of life. For
this, Hari makes use of - in her words - the "sincerity" that nudity
can express. Since everything is interconnected, we can also contemplate
elements of nature in her art, such as flowers and animals. All portrayed
within dreamlike atmospheres with extraordinary talent.
In
this interview, the first of our blog, Hari tells about her childhood, her
relationship with God, about the messages in her work and still exposes her
personal taste, particularly with regard to cinema. Check it out:
DOUGLAS:
When did you decide to pursue a career in visual
arts? In childhood and adolescence, had you already discovered a certain
inclination towards the creative arts?
HARI: I
was born on Febraury 12, 1985 in the Art Capital of the Philippines, Angono,
Rizal. At an early age, I’ve showed a lot of interest in art, more specifically
in drawing. I remember, whenever there’s a nice cartoon on TV and we cannot
afford to buy illustrations/stickers of characters from those cartoons, I will
just draw them on a sheet of paper so I can have a remembrance of them. The
same applies on my favorite Disney movies; they inspired me at a young age to
draw cartoon characters and made me dream to become an animator at Disney
Company someday.
I
was a quiet and shy type of kid who would prefer to have a coloring book
instead of new toys or clothes. I’m very thankful to my parents for supporting
my love for painting, especially my dad who never get tired of buying me
coloring books, art materials and art books.
I
remember before I get admitted for Grade 1 at Primary School, there’s an examination
that we need to pass. One of the tasks was to draw our father. Most of the kids
drew stick figure but my figure drawing that time already had volume and so
much details that impressed the teachers. Since then, I have been consistently
chosen to represent the school for art competitions and luckily, I often
receive an award.
DOUGLAS:
How do you define and how did you build your
artistic style? What were your biggest influences in this regard?
HARI: I
love creating figurative artworks. The form of the human body, specifically the
naked body, has always fascinated me. I find it elegant, classic and very
relatable. There is also a feeling of
“sincerity” that I love seeing on a naked form. These qualities inspire me to
use nude figure as my subject matter to deliver the theme, which is LOVE. I can
say that all my artworks revolve around love as the main theme. Love has influenced my life in so many ways
that’s why I have the eagerness to capture that feeling through my artworks.
I
can describe my artistic style as a marriage of realism, symbolism and
expressionism. I prefer to paint my subject in a recognisable style so the
viewers can have a solid reference to relate to. I also love using symbols to
tell a story in an interesting way. As much as possible, I leave enough space
for me to work on my art in an expressive way through my brushstrokes.
I
see all artists and artworks that cross my path as a source of motivation.
Since my childhood I have had many art Teachers and other individuals whom
taught me so much and I am forever grateful to them. God however gave me this
talent and thus it would be a shame not to give Him the Praise and Glory.
I
believe in God, that God created everything including all the beautiful
sceneries, the expressive sky and all the unique creatures, that is why I
consider God as my favorite artist. Aside from everything that I can see, the
main reason why God is my favourite artist is because of what God makes me feel
and that is LOVE. My personal relationship with God is hard to explain. I try
to speak to God everyday through prayers and tell God all my desires and sins.
God has seen my worst side and knows my ugliest thoughts but despite all of
that I can still fell the acceptance, mercy and most specially Love from God.
For me, God is Love and there’s nothing more inspiring than that.
DOUGLAS:
Your paintings carry a powerful poetry. The
richness of detail and the intensity of the shapes impress with the very high
quality. Where do you find inspiration to compose such beautiful designs?
HARI: My
artworks are inspired by powerful lessons I’ve learned from life. My paintings emphasize the value of life.
Layers of expressive brush strokes can be observed at each painting, together
with my rich devotion to details. I paint with my heart. For me, a painting is
successful if it can make anyone who would look at it feel the emotion that
it’s suppose to give. It is like delivering a clear message by touching the
hearts of the viewers.
DOUGLAS:
Among the elements of your works, commonly we see
animals such as horses, birds, fish. What is their meaning within the canvas?
HARI: Aside
for human figures, I incorporate elements like nature and animals (like you’ve
mentioned) to show that we are all connected. I strongly believe that whatever
we humans do greatly affects the animals, nature and everything that surrounds
us.
DOUGLAS:
Do you have future projects?
HARI: I
am happy to announce that my first and second series of artworks are all SOLD
OUT. Right now, I’m currently working on the third series that I’m planning to
release to the public before this year ends. I’m also hoping that I can exhibit
them this year 2019. Please follow me on my social media accounts or you can
also subscribe to my newsletter to be always updated on my upcoming
exhibitions.
DOUGLAS:
In closing, could you recommend books (and/or
movies) that have made an impact in your life?
HARI: I
love watching movies! I can say that the movies that touched my heart when I
was still young are those who made impact in my life. They are AI - Artificial
Intelligence, Gladiator and my most favourite movie - Memoirs of a Geisha.
Aside from them being visually breathtaking, they are very effective at pulling
one’s heartstrings.
